Tumblr Mobile Reporting Experience
By Nicole Brajer
On Monday, November 23rd, I visited Hofstra University’s Public Safety and Information Center. It was past noon, a time where those working in and outside the building are busy. Whether the secretaries or officers at the desk are making phone calls and taking care of paper work, or officers on call are making drop-offs, Public Safety never stops working.
Those inside the Information Center, including officers I attempted to get a statement from walking in and out the building, did not even have time for a statement to be recorded other than on paper. “We provide campus and student safety,” said one of the Public Safety employees. From my own research and knowledge, I recorded to calls to my Tumblr from my phone outside on the corner of California Avenue and Hempstead Turnpike, the office’s location.
I also provided pictures from my cell phone to my Tumblr that could only be taken outside due to the amount of people and labor going on inside. After returning to a computer to go over my reporting, I added captions to my uploaded pictures on Tumblr to tell a story of what Public Safety’s obligation is at Hofstra. Additionally, separate captions were added to my audio clips to provide to readers what they’re about to hear.
My information was re-blogged to my JRNL 10 class’s Tumblr to be viewed and reviewed by classmates. Reporting from a cell phone is just as effective if not more for fast and revisable editing purposes. Using Tumblr as our source was not difficult. Surprisingly, getting an interview from Hofstra’s Public Safety was a harder task. Fortunately, I learned from the experience and will take it with me through my following years as an inspiring journalist.

Hofstra provides the Public Safety officers plenty of vehicles for transportation for emergencies such as fires, an injured student, a locked out student, or situation on either side of campus.

Hofstra Public Safety is located conveniently for students, faculty, and visitors on the corner of California Avenue and Hempstead Turnpike. The building serves as an information center for the public, as well as a place to retrieve lost items and deal with ticketing violations.

Hofstra Public Safety is not only in charge of student safety, but campus safety. When campus activity and events are taking place, the officers are to stay on call, look out for parking, and set up signs for the public.
- My favorite actor… I was hypnotized at my project graduation in front of my entire senior class. The hypnotist pointed out a kid in the audience and put his hand on my shoulder as my eyes were closed…already in the process of hypnosis. He explained to me once he said a certain word…that I would see the kid in the audience and it would be my favorite actor…who I had previously already told him was Johnny Depp. Once the word was said later on…I freaked out…jumped on the kid and kissed him in front of everyone. I barely knew him.
- Excited for his starring role in “Alice in Wonderland” debuting in March of 2010; directed by the infamous Tim Burton.
